Leveraging AI in HR & L&D to Do More with Less.

Updated: Feb 7

As we enter the first quarter of 2024, HR and L&D teams face the ever-present challenge of doing even more with less.

With a wave of legislative changes, budget cuts and the rise of GenAI, keeping up with technology feels overwhelming, almost impossible at times.

Research shows managers are struggling, and HR and L&D teams are battling regular burnout and frustration.

Against the backdrop of a growing digital skills gap and mounting pressure to re-empower front-line leaders and deliver more tailored HR and L&D services, many are turning to the benefits of automation and GenAI to unlock efficiency gains and improve processes and outcomes.

Embracing AI as a strategic imperative.

So where are we at with AI adoption in HR & L&D?

And what does the data tell us?

Results from our recent LinkedIn Employee Experience poll indicated a 50/50 split in AI usage among HR and L&D pros, signalling its emerging use in our daily tasks.

Broader research insights show an even stronger upward trend in AI, with 64% of HR Professionals reporting their organisation either uses or plans to use AI in at least one HR function (SHRM, 2024 HR Technology Report).

Looking ahead, McKinsey suggests around half of today’s business activities could be automated a decade earlier than previous estimates had projected.

While there’s already been a huge amount of interest and speculation about how GenAI will impact how we work in the future; the reality is, that transforming HR and L&D’s performance requires careful investment and adoption.

The future of work requires us to think differently about our approach.

To stand back and reevaluate how we deliver on our value proposition.

Moreover, HR and L&D teams must upskill, embrace uncertainty, and shift from perfectionism to experimentation.

An end to the “pursuit of perfectionism”.

Historically, we’ve been guilty of the "pursuit of perfection”, but this is a luxury and HR and L&D teams can no longer afford to spend months designing and developing complex products and services. Agile experimentation positions HR & L&D teams as a proactive strategic (and tactical) partner, driving innovation and adaptation. With this model, teams quickly identify and test solutions to emerging challenges, like digital skills gaps or changing employee expectations before they become major roadblocks.

This might involve:

-             Pilot testing new ways of working with smaller groups before full-scale implementation

or

-             Experimenting with bite-sized microlearning on in-demand topic areas after reviewing learner needs.

Embracing AI’s potential.

With AI as our digital co-pilot, HR and L&D teams can now free up time across a wide range of areas, and we’ve seen some fantastic examples of AI in action across our technology partner network. (More about this in future editions).

CHROs and L&D leaders must now prioritise evaluating their HR processes through the lens of AI and automation and identify areas for integration.
